What makes this site tick ?

This website runs on an Apache 1.3.36 webserver with PHP 5.1.4 and MySQL 4.1.19 hosted by AlfaHosting.

At home I develop using XAMPP (Apache 2.2.2, PHP 5.1.4, MySQL 5.0.21) on a Windows XP Pro machine and on a LAMP webserver (Debian Sarge, Apache2, PHP5, MySQL5) in a homenetwork.

All meta-data (title, description, keywords) for every webpage is stored in a XML-file. The information is retrieved using simpleXML.

Soon all communication with the database will be done using the PEAR DB-package.

Random Feeds: three times a day a dozen feeds (SlashDot, LockerGnome, AlterNet, ZDNET, ...) are copied to a locale directory, read (via DOM), processed and and stored in a database. Everytime you visit a webdev-page, 3 random feeds are shown, with 2 random items each.

Your choice of language and layout is stored using cookies. When you haven't made a change, the default language is based on your browsers settings.

Everytime you visit the startpage, you get a random quote.

This website has a dynamic RSS-feed (PHP-page) that shows the 10 most recent changes to this website. This data is also used for the Updates-column, the Update-page and to display the versionnumber and last update underneath the menu.
